The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has expressed approval of the government’s sudden action regarding the long-neglected Gbarpolu County Bridge Project. On July 11, 2025, Musa Hassan Bility, CMC’s political leader and Nimba District 7 lawmaker, announced plans to break ground for the construction of the bridge. However, just hours later, the government declared it would take charge and commence construction immediately.
This unexpected move has ignited mixed reactions, with some criticizing the Boakai-Koung administration as unresponsive. Others have questioned the government’s competence, citing unqualified individuals in key positions. Despite the controversy, Bility reaffirmed the CMC’s commitment to Liberia’s development. “We announced our intention to build a bridge that has claimed many lives over the years,” Bility said. “Neglected by successive governments, this bridge symbolizes abandonment and state failure. Yet, we’re committed to developing our country.” Bility expressed surprise at the government’s rapid response, noting that equipment and manpower were quickly deployed to the site.
The CMC hopes the government’s actions aren’t merely an attempt to undermine their efforts. “We don’t seek to compete with the government in development,” Bility clarified. “We welcome collaboration that advances the Liberian people’s cause.” The CMC has similar projects planned in Bong and River Gee Counties and a major bridge linking Bong and Nimba Counties.
If the government wishes to undertake these projects, the CMC would step aside to address other urgent needs. “Our mission is not about seeking credit but achieving tangible results for the Liberian people,” Bility emphasized. “Development is not a favor but a duty.” He added that if their efforts awaken a dormant government to its responsibilities, the CMC’s mission is already yielding positive results. Bility reminded the administration that the true competition lies between poverty and progress. “If the people succeed, Liberia succeeds,” he asserted. The CMC vows to continue serving and leading in pursuit of national development.
