MONROVIA, Liberia – February 9, 2026 – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Liberia’s opposition political party, has announced the immediate expulsion of three prominent members, citing actions deemed disloyal and in violation of the party’s constitution.

In a statement released Monday, the party named Senator Zoe E. Pennue of Grand Gedeh County, Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, and Representative Samson Wiah of Sinoe County District Two as the individuals removed from its ranks. The decision, endorsed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), is attributed to nearly 18 months of conduct described as damaging to the CDC’s interests.

According to the statement, the expulsions were executed under provisions of the CDC constitution, specifically referencing clauses related to membership cessation. These include Section 47, which outlines conditions such as “constructive withdrawal by open declaration of transfer of loyalty to another political party.”

The CDC alleges that the three expelled members utilized public platforms to criticize the party and aligned themselves with the opposition Unity Party government, which the CDC claims “does not uphold the values of good governance.” The party characterized the members’ conduct as “deviant and anti-CDC,” stating they have “absolutely no ties with the CDC.”

“The CDC does not condone such actions and affirms that these individuals are no longer affiliated with the party,” the release stated. It further cautioned the public against engaging in political business with the expelled individuals in the name of the CDC. Despite the internal reorganization, the CDC affirmed its commitment to its “people-centered principles” and reiterated its political objective to defeat the current Unity Party administration in the 2029 general elections.
