Joseph Boakai Jr., the son of Liberia’s President, has recently been seen enjoying a lavish lifestyle in Nigeria alongside the controversial businessman Obinna Iyiegbu, also known as Obi Cubana. Iyiegbu has a troubling history, having been arrested in 2021 by Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on charges of money laundering and tax fraud. Reports indicate that Boakai Jr. is attempting to entice Iyiegbu to Liberia with a questionable proposal to establish a brothel, allegedly involving the trafficking of underage girls on a global scale.
Since his father’s inauguration, Boakai Jr. has effectively acted as the de facto prime minister of Liberia, often leveraging his influential position for personal gain. He is currently earning millions of U.S. dollars as a liaison officer for Bea Mountain Mining Company in Grand Cape Mount County. This company has faced criticism for its exploitation of Liberia’s mineral resources and its use of state security forces to gun down marginalized workers protesting against poor labor practices. While the younger Boakai is jet-setting around the world in private planes with teenage girls, his father remains back home, looting on an industrial scale from the 7th poorest nation on the face of the earth.
There have been reports that Boakai Jr. has questionable investments in Nigeria, which may explain his frequent trips to the country. Notably, in July 2024, he attended an event in Ilawo town, Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he discussed the bilateral relationship between Liberia and Nigeria. Boakai Jr. has faced repeated allegations of selling government positions to the highest bidder, a claim that has not been publicly denied. Liberians are concerned about the strange relationship between their president’s son and a Nigerian businessman who is facing allegations of money laundering and tax fraud by his government.
