Police brutality is on the rise in Liberia, and the latest victim is Zainab Bah, a member of the Muslim community. On July 22, 2025, Madam Bah, who belongs to the minority Fula ethnic group, faced horrific abuse at the hands of officers from the Liberia National Police (LNP). Credible reports and disturbing video footage that emerged on social media reveal that Zainab and her baby were violently assaulted, her niqab was forcibly removed, and the video also shows officers aggressively taking the child from her and shockingly throwing the baby to the ground, resulting in serious injuries to the infant.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Madam Bah was held overnight at the Gobachop Police Depot without any access to medical care or legal assistance, completely ignoring her rights and the laws of Liberia. This incident has heightened outrage among civil society organizations and individuals, with the Fula Progressive Union of Liberia (FPUL) joining the chorus of condemnation.
In a press release dated July 24, 2025, the Union strongly denounced the act and called for an immediate investigation. FPUL views this incident as a severe violation of Madam Bah’s fundamental rights, including her rights to religious expression, her rights as a woman and mother, and her child’s right to safety and humane treatment. “This incident highlights a deeply concerning level of police brutality and a systemic disregard for human dignity, especially towards women, children, and religious minorities,” the Union stated.
The Fula Progressive Union of Liberia is demanding the immediate suspension of all officers involved, an independent and impartial investigation, urgent medical treatment for both Madam Bah and her child, and public accountability, including appropriate legal action against those responsible. Additionally, the Union is calling for comprehensive reforms in police training, emphasizing the importance of humane treatment.
The Liberia National Police has denied allegations against its officers, despite video footage. However, they claim to have launched a full-scale investigation.
