Monrovia, Liberia – June 28, 2025 – The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has announced plans to implement a staff retirement, downsizing, rightsizing, and reshuffle plan, potentially affecting hundreds of employees. This decision comes at a time when Liberia is grappling with worsening economic hardship, leaving many citizens struggling to make ends meet.
The LAA management claims that the decision is aimed at streamlining operations and ensuring long-term sustainable efficiency, citing a resolution from the Board of Directors authorizing the move. According to the management, the process will conform to the Decent Works Act of Liberia, Standing Orders of the Civil Service Agency (CSA), and other related labor laws.
However, with Liberia’s economy in a precarious state, the potential job losses are likely to exacerbate the country’s economic woes. Many Liberians are already struggling to access basic necessities, and the prospect of losing employment opportunities will only add to their woes.
While the management insists that the decision is not meant to “witch-hunt” any individual, the reality is that many employees may lose their livelihoods due to circumstances beyond their control. The Unity Party led government has a history of dismissing without cause government workers believed to be members of the Congress for Democratic Change.
As the country continues to grapple with economic challenges, the LAA’s decision to downsize its workforce evokes questions about the government’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and promoting economic development. The ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), which the LAA claims to be aligned with, aims to promote economic growth and development. However, the potential job losses may undermine these efforts.
The LAA management has assured that the process will be carefully planned and implemented in accordance with international best practices and labor laws. Nevertheless, the fate of hundreds of employees hangs in the balance, and the outcome of this decision remains to be seen.
