Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Kabineh M. Ja’neh, has expressed regret over his previous support for the Unity Party, citing disappointment with President Joseph Boakai’s governance style. Ja’neh criticized the administration, labeling it as “lawless” and accusing the President of undermining the rule of law and disrespecting the Supreme Court’s authority.

The former Associate Justice stated that the Unity Party’s actions indicate a significant departure from the values he once associated with the party. He expressed his disappointment, saying, “This is not the party I supported. The leadership’s approach to tenure positions, the Supreme Court, and governance differs from my expectations.”

Ja’neh’s comments come amid growing concerns about the Unity Party’s leadership, including allegations of political interference, corruption, mismanagement, and marginalization of institutions meant to serve as checks and balances. Meanwhile, President Boakai has defended his use of private jets for foreign trips, stating it’s in the national interest and not an abuse of public funds. Many view this as a contradiction to his campaign promises and a sign of disconnect from the realities faced by ordinary Liberians, especially in light of ongoing economic hardships.

The World Bank’s Liberia Poverty Assessment Report (2023) reveals that over half of Liberia’s population lives in poverty, with significant urban-rural disparities. The report recommends sustained economic growth, job creation, and human capital investments to address poverty. However, the Unity Party regime’s response to these findings has been limited, with concerns about their commitment to tackling the structural factors contributing to poverty.
