CDC Warns Against Politicization of Corruption Fight

The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has condemned the arrest of several prominent citizens and former officials, alleging that the charges are false and politically motivated. The party claims that the arrests are part of a trend of harassment and intimidation by the current government against opposition members.

According to the CDC, the allegations of corruption relating to the diversion of rice intended for disaster victims are “false, far-fetched, and manufactured.” The party argues that the government’s actions are a attempt to shift attention from its own corruption issues and accused officials who have been allowed to roam freely.

The CDC also expressed concern over the treatment of prominent citizens, including former First Lady of Liberia Madam Thelma Comfort Sawyer, and Madam Mary Broh, who were allegedly subjected to excessive force and disregard for their basic rights. The party characterized these actions as a “terrible omen and a menace to our democracy, peace, and reconciliation.”

The former ruling party emphasized its commitment to the rule of law and its willingness to cooperate with investigations, but also warned that its commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness. The party called for the dismissal of the allegations against its leaders and an end to future harassment and intimidation.

“We want to establish our disdain for corruption and willingness to join in the fight against the misuse of public resources, but strongly oppose a biased fight, politically driven, window dressing and attention seeking. Accordingly, owing to the preponderance of evidence of no wrongdoing by the accused, we call for the dismissal, with immediate effect, of the allegations against our leaders and the disengagement from future harassment and intimidation of our peace-loving and democratically minded partisans and well-wishers.” Atty Janga Augustus Kowo, Chairman of the CDC wrote.
