Liberia Sliding to Hell, CDC Warns

The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) warns that Liberia is sliding toward state collapse, accusing President Joseph Boakai’s administration of orchestrating political prosecutions, attempting to bribe jurors, and turning security forces into a “state-sanctioned militia.”

In a statement released ahead of its annual Militant Month observance, the main opposition party declared that economic misery is driving the nation backward into conditions resembling Liberia’s civil war years—when “hunger was law and hope a forgotten tongue.”

CDC Prepares for ‘Militant Month’ in Zwedru The party announced that preparations are underway for its annual Militant Month observance, scheduled for June 23–27, 2026, in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County. The event will commemorate the CDC’s 22nd founding anniversary on May 27. To coordinate the gathering, the CDC established a Central Planning Committee and a Grand Gedeh County Subcommittee, tasking them with logistics, mobilization, and security arrangements.

‘Campaign of Lies’ Unravels, CDC Says The CDC claimed that the Unity Party (UP) has waged a years-long campaign to demonize its leaders and criminalize former President George Weah’s administration. The opposition alleged that UP operatives attempted to bribe jurors with approximately $275,000—money linked to Amos Tweh, Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company and Secretary General of the ruling party.

“When nurses, teachers, and civil servants are struggling, why would the Boakai-Koung regime attempt to bribe jurors?” the CDC statement asked. According to the CDC, jurors rejected the alleged bribe based on the defense team’s diligent work. However, the party warned that the regime has now ordered surrogates to “harm such patriots who served as jurors” as a lesson for future cases.

CDC pointed to fresh indictments against former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah Jr., former Acting Justice Minister Nyenati Tuan, former National Security Advisor Jefferson Karmoh, former FIA head Stanley S. Ford, former Commerce Minister Mawine Diggs, and former Deputy Minister Samora P.Z. Wolokollie. The party also claimed “jungle justice” is planned against former Chief of Protocol Amb. Nora Finda Bundoo. In response, the CDC declared it would adopt a “non-compliance posture” to prevent what it called a descent into “bloody warfare.”

Warnings Ignored, CDC Says The opposition asserted that it had repeatedly warned of the Boakai regime’s dangerous direction, including: · Disregard for constitutional norms and tenure protections
· Politicization of the Liberia National Police under Gregory Coleman
· Alleged torture and extrajudicial killings in security cells
· The attempted assassination of Rep. Frank Saah Foko (District 9) on March 31, 2026, which remains uninvestigated
· The “legislative coup d’état” against Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and the expulsion of Rep. Yekeh Kolubah
· Rising living costs and declining purchasing power

Defining the ‘Mogadishu Moment’ The CDC invoked the Somali capital as a historical symbol of state collapse—marked by political divisions, lost institutional legitimacy, deteriorating security, and prolonged citizen hardship. “The CDC is not predicting that Liberia will become Somalia,” the statement clarified. “Rather, we are warning that any country can face severe instability when constitutional safeguards are weakened, political disputes overwhelm institutions, and citizens lose confidence in the state’s ability to govern fairly and effectively.”

‘Big Bag’ Water Recalls War Years Perhaps the starkest symbol of decline, the CDC said, is the growing reliance on “big bag” untreated water—drawn from wells and packaged in unsanitary plastic bags—which has become more expensive under the Boakai administration’s Water and Sewer Corporation. “This fundamentally differs from commercially produced purified sachet water,” the statement said. “The widespread use of ‘big bag’ recalls the difficult conditions of Liberia’s war years, when citizens had no choice but to rely on unsafe alternatives to survive.”

Convention Plans Announced CDC announced that immediately after the Zwedru celebration, preparations will begin for an “extraordinary national convention” to place the party on an “irreversible, redemptive trajectory.” The party called on civil society, religious leaders, youth and women’s organizations, and international partners to remain vigilant.

“Redemption is in sight,” the statement concluded. The party listed over 30 partisans to lead the Zwedru committees, including Senator Gbleh-bo Brown as Central Committee Chairman and Sampson Bossoe Williams as Sub-Committee Chairman.
