On Saturday, July 12, 2025, a tragic fire swept through a three-bedroom home on Duport Road in Paynesville, Montserrado County, claiming the lives of three children and a young pregnant woman. The children’s mother had stepped out to tend to her nighttime food business, leaving them vulnerable to the rapidly spreading flames.

The pregnant woman was rushed to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. Although the cause of the fire has not been established, the community is in shock and mourning. Local leaders and residents are coming together to support the affected families during this difficult time. This devastating incident underscores the critical need for fire safety awareness and preventive measures to protect lives and property. Residents are urged to prioritize fire safety, take proactive steps to mitigate risks, and adopt necessary precautions to prevent future tragedies.

Fire incidents have been a recurring issue in Liberia under President Joseph Boakai’s government, claiming the lives of dozens of Liberians and destroying millions of dollars worth of property. The government has faced criticism for its inadequate response to the fire crisis, with the national fire service struggling with insufficient budgetary support, logistics, and equipment.
