The Students Unification Party (SUP) at the state-run University of Liberia (UL) is demanding the immediate removal of House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon from his position as a lecturer at the university. During a protest on Monday, August 4, SUP accused Speaker Koon of accepting bribes from students in exchange for academic grades, a serious claim that has ignited outrage throughout the campus.
“We’re calling for the University of Liberia to let go of Richard Koon because he’s teaching here while taking money from students for grades,” stated a representative from SUP. The student organization also took aim at Speaker Koon for focusing on renovating the House of Representatives’ joint chambers while seemingly ignoring the university’s needs.
They branded him a “regime Speaker” and labeled him “a criminal in the legislature.” As tensions rise, students have pledged to ramp up their actions, warning of unspecified resistance in the days ahead. They commended recent student-led tire-burning protests and promised to continue similar demonstrations. So far, neither Speaker Koon nor the University of Liberia administration has officially addressed the allegations.
