Fighting for the Soul of Liberia: Koijee Declares War on Falsehoods

Jefferson Tamba Koijee, the former Lord Mayor of Monrovia and current Secretary General of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), has broken his silence on what he describes as a concerted campaign of lies and political persecution orchestrated against him, which culminated in his sanctioning by the United States government.

In a strongly-worded social media post, Koijee framed his personal and political struggles as a divinely-guided test of resilience, asserting that the attempts to “bury his name” have only proven the strength of his purpose. “They have tried to define me by lies, to bury my name under the weight of falsehoods and politics but every attempt only proves how unstoppable God’s purpose is,” Koijee stated. “I have walked through storms that were meant to silence me, yet I still stand, not by my own strength, but by His grace.”

The post directly references a significant low point in his career: his sanction by the U.S. Department of the Treasury in December 2021. At that time, the U.S. government accused Koijee of engaging in “corruption that undermines the rule of law.” The specific details of the sanctions, levied under the Global Magnitsky Act, alleged that Koijee was involved in “pay-for-play funding” with government contractors and was the leader of the CDC’s youth wing, which was accused of “intimidating political opponents.”

These sanctions, which Koijee and his party have consistently denied and attributed to misinformation from the then-opposition Unity Party, resulted in the blocking of all his property and interests subject to U.S. jurisdiction. Reflecting on this period, Koijee portrayed his battles as a broader fight for the soul of Liberian politics. He suggested that the “scars” he bears are not his alone but are shared by his supporters.

“The battles I face are not for me alone, they are for every young Liberian who believes that truth can still stand tall in a world of deception,” he wrote. “My scars are not symbols of defeat; they are the price of conviction and the testimony of resilience.” The statement is being interpreted by political analysts as a defiant reassertion of his position within the CDC and a bid to frame his controversial past as a badge of honor ahead of future political engagements. It signals a continued refusal to be sidelined by international pressure or domestic opposition, grounding his political survival in a narrative of faith and destiny.

Jefferson Koijee’s journey in Liberian politics is a notable narrative of rapid ascent through the ranks of the Congress for Democratic Change. His political career began in student activism, where he mobilized thousands of students to bring about political, social, economic, and environmental change, focusing on issues that directly and indirectly affected students’ lives, their schools, and their communities—a role that served as a springboard for national political engagement. His dynamism and loyalty propelled him into the inner circle of former President George Weah, who appointed him as the Mayor of Monrovia in 2018, making him one of the youngest individuals to ever hold that position. As Mayor, Koijee was a highly visible and often controversial figure, overseeing city management while simultaneously rising to become the Secretary General of the CDC. In this powerful party role, he solidified his reputation as a key strategist and organizer, cementing his status as a central figure in the future of the party and Liberian politics.

Beyond his political maneuvers, Koijee has also engaged in humanitarian and societal contributions, often channeled through his political and personal foundations. He has been involved in various community-based initiatives, including providing scholarships to underprivileged students, supporting youth sports programs, and making donations to hospitals and religious institutions. His ‘Team Koijee’ platform has organized charity events, distributed essential supplies during holidays, and offered support to vulnerable communities. While these actions are frequently publicized and intertwined with his political brand, they represent a tangible effort to address social welfare needs and have garnered him a base of popular support among many Liberians who have directly and indirectly benefited from these gestures.
