A new fee structure has been rolled out at the Invincible Sports Park in Monrovia. The Unity Party-led administration has started charging entrance fees, photo session fees, and various other costs, which many locals view as a heavy burden and a form of exploitation. This is particularly concerning for struggling Liberians who typically visit the Invincible Sports Park to unwind and escape the overwhelming stress brought on by a government that campaigned on a promise to “Rescue” but has only deepened their economic challenges.
The Park was built in 2021 under the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) government, which was led by the legendary global football icon, former President George M. Weah. It purpose was to address the lack of recreational and sports facilities aimed at youth development, particularly for aspiring football players. It was also envisioned as a tranquil space for reflection and a point of national pride.
Sadly, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, the Unity Party administration introduced a series of new fees that impact access to the park and photography, sparking public outrage. The new fees include L$100 for entry, L$500 for individual photo sessions, and US$5 for wedding photography, among others. This marks the first time that fees have been implemented in these categories for the park since its inception by former President Weah.
Liberians are viewing this move as an effort to extract money from ordinary Liberians, while others are concerned it signals a troubling trend of corruption within the new administration.
There’s already glaring evidence of untidiness at both the Invincible Sports Park and the Unity Sports Park, built by former President George Weah. Skeptics wonder why a rescue government would impose exorbitant fees on sporting facilities that were relatively free under the George Weah-led administration, yet fail to keep them clean.
